A stay at the round tower on the Derwent

Wrest Point opened as Australia's first casino hotel in 1973. We are not the hotel — we are an independent guide that reads everything it publishes, checks it, and helps you request the right room.

Illustration, not a photograph of Wrest Point

Wrest Point stands on a point in Sandy Bay, about 3 km from central Hobart, with the River Derwent on one side and kunanyi / Mt Wellington behind. Its round tower — the hotel calls it Tasmania's tallest building — holds a revolving restaurant seventeen floors up; around it are a 1939 riverside wing, a convention centre, a casino and a motor inn. The hotel lists 271 rooms across three buildings.

This site is Tower on the Derwent, an independent guide written for people deciding whether to stay there, which room to choose, and what to do with the days. Every fact links to where we read it, and where the hotel's own pages disagree with each other we say so. When you are ready, our booking desk will ask for a room on your behalf and answer by email.

Our short verdict

Book Wrest Point for the position and the view: a harbour-side Tower room, a swim in the heated pool, dinner at The Point and a show in the Showroom, with Salamanca and the MONA ferry a short ride away. Book elsewhere if you want to walk out of the door into the old town every evening — the hotel is close to the centre, not in it. The longer argument is on the verdict page.
